Austria Weather Guide

Due to its topographical diversity, there are a few different climatic regions in the Republic of Austria. In the east, there isn’t much rain, the summers are hot and the winters are mild, whereas in the alpine region, it rains quite a lot and with short summers and long winters. The rest of the landlocked country is influenced by the climatic variations of the Atlantic Ocean.

Season and Clothing

Summer: June to August

In summer, the temps in Austria can reach as high as 32 degrees Celsius, but generally it’s only around 24 degrees on average. This is the time of year to come if you want to get your hiking boots on. Although, it’s also the time of year when the most rain falls. It’s also high season as travellers launch into their European tours, so expect plenty of crowds in tourist spots and higher room rates.

Autumn: September to November

Come autumn, there are less crowds around and the picturesque Austrian countryside is especially pretty as the leaves change colour and fall to the ground. The temps have cooled off a little to around 14 degrees Celsius during the day, however it can get as low as 7 degrees in some parts of the country, so be sure to pack some warmer clothing especially if you plan to visit some of the alpine regions and places like Salzburg and Innsbruck.

Winter: December to February

The Austrian winters are pretty long and cold, but it’s also the time of year to hit the slopes so that makes up for the cold, right? And when we say cold, we mean cold. It can get as low as -12 degrees Celsius in some spots. Brrrr. On average though, temps are between -2 and 3 degrees, but don’t worry, most places are centrally heated. If you are visiting over the festive season, make sure you take in the magical lights and traditions of a Christmas market in Vienna – worth heading outside for!

Spring: March to May

Could Austria be any prettier than in springtime? March through May is the time to come to see the country’s spectacular natural beauty in full bloom. Average spring temperatures are pretty cool still hovering between 5 and 14 degrees Celsius, so bring your warm coat, scarf and gloves plus clothing for layering. It starts to warm up in May making it ideal to visit the beautiful Achensee region.
