Marrakech Weather Guide

Marrakech is a year-round holiday destination with 4 distinct seasons. It’s popular in summer yet perhaps best visited during spring or autumn for optimal temps to explore the bustling city in Morocco.

Season and Clothing

Summer: June to August

It can get very hot in Marrakech during summer, especially during July. The nights offer slight relief and on the plus-side, the days are clear and sunny. In June, dusty winds known as siroccos swirl across the city. Shops and restaurants often close during Ramadan in July or August, but fun celebrations mark the end. In July, the Marrakech Popular Arts Festival is an impressive display of local talent from folk singers to snake charmers.

Average temperatures: 18 - 39 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Lightweight layers and sandals.
Don’t forget: Water and something to protect you from the sun.

Autumn: September to November

A great time to visit Marrakech, autumn offers warm weather with temps in the early to mid-20s and cooler nights. Towards the end of the season, snow starts to fall on the Atlas Mountains. This is a great season for exploring the markets (souks) of the old city (medina) as well as checking out the city’s stunning Moroccan-Moorish architecture.

Average temperatures: 10 - 32 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Clothes for layering: jeans, pants, t-shirts and jumpers.
Don’t forget: Conservative clothes for visiting mosques and space in your bag for handicrafts.

Winter: December to February

The days are still relatively warm, but be prepared for cooler nights and more frequent than usual rain during winter in Marrakech. Embrace the cold and enjoy fewer crowds. It is also possible to ski near Marrakech at Oukaimeden. Jemaa el Fna square is a great backdrop for December’s Marrakech International Film Festival, while the Marrakech Marathon is on in January and Dakka Marrakchia Festival of traditional music hits town in February.

Average temperatures: 6 - 20 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Jeans, boots, long-sleeve tops, scarves and knitwear.
Don’t forget: A light jacket for night-time, ski gear if you want to visit the Atlas Mountains.

Spring: March to May

Spring is another great time to visit Marrakech. No longer cold and not yet hot, the foliage comes out and the greenery is impressive, especially in the city’s famous gardens and further afield at the Atlas Mountains and waterfalls. There’s all sorts of outdoor garden celebrations to mark this special time of year, and fashion fans won't want to miss Majorelle Gardens, where the late Yves Saint Laurent was a patron and his ashes were scattered. Expect some light rainfall during this season and sandstorms in April.

Average temperatures: 11 - 29 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Clothes for layering: jeans, pants, t-shirts and jumpers.
Don’t forget: Comfortable shoes for roaming gardens and markets and allergy tablets for hayfever sufferers.
