Romania Basic Information
Beware, Count Dracula may not be the only bogeyman to worry about in Romania - there have been reports of travellers being robbed by fake police officers in Romania. For more need-to-know info before you go, read on.
Australian passport holders going to Romania on holiday for less than a total of 90 days do not need a visa to enter the country. Make sure your passport has at least 6 months’ validity from the date of your entry into Romania. This information is a guideline. For up-to-the-minute visa information, contact your local Embassy or Consulate of Romania.
Romania uses the Romanian Leu as currency. The exchange rate between the Australian Dollar and the Romanian Leu changes constantly, so keep an eye on the exchange rate and purchase the currency when the rate is at its best. For safe spending while overseas, consider using a credit or debit card.
Romanian food is meat-heavy and influenced by times-gone-by trading with ancient Greeks, Romans, Saxons and Turks and the cuisines of its neighbouring nations. Try mititei (skinless sausages), sarmale (stuffed cabbage leaves), piftie (jellied pork offcuts) and ciorba de burta (tripe soup) if you dare and wash it down with tuica (a strong plum brandy) and unique cheeses stored in tree bark from the southeast of Transylvania. If traditional dishes don’t appeal, the capital, Bucharest, also has a wide variety of international cuisines from Asian to Mediterranean and Middle Eastern as well as high-end dining.
Live music to vintage lounges and mega clubs occupy Bucharest entertainment districts like Calea Victoriei and Lipscani. For a little history, try the capital’s oldest beer hall, Caru’ cu Bere, or one of the many wine, jazz and Latino bars scattered throughout the town. The nightlife is generally safe, the dress code casual and hot tips include hitting the bars around 8pm to get a table and buying wine by the bottle to get a better price. Clubs and the like can be found in all Romanian major cities. Folk festivals, especially during summer, come equipped with enhanced nightlife too.
