Shanghai Transport Guide

Shanghai has the world’s largest public transport network with buses, subway trains, ferries and taxi services to get you around. As the most populous Chinese city, congestion and crowding is inevitable, so try to avoid the rush hour commute.

How to get around Shanghai

With 8 lines, the subway is the fastest and most convenient way to travel to popular Shanghai sights and the main areas. Ferries cross the Huangpu River to link the Pudong and Puxi areas. The Shanghai Public Transportation Card allows you to store credit to use on taxis, buses (including tourist buses), the subway, ferry and trucks. Another option is to travel by bicycle, which is also a cheap and convenient option for the backpacker. Taxis are also easy to be found and reasonably priced.
