Zagreb Weather Guide

There are 4 distinct seasons in Zagreb. Summers are long and the temperatures can remain pretty hot from the end of May ‘til early September. Winter runs from December to early March and can be pretty cold with snow falling, which is great for the ski season. There is no dry season in Croatia’s capital as it rains fairly consistently throughout the year.

Season and Clothing

Summer: June to August

Summers in Zagreb are warm and balmy making it a lovely time to visit the Croatian capital. Average highs hover around 22 degrees, but in July and August daytime temps can reach past 30 degrees Celsius – perfect weather for a dip in Lake Juran. June is the wettest month of the year, however the majority of summer offers sunshine and beautiful weather, which also draw crowds so expect higher hotel rates if you plan on visiting during this season.

Average temperatures: 12.5 – 27 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Shorts, t-shirts, dresses and jeans.
Don’t forget: A lightweight jacket for night and an umbrella.

Autumn: September to November

Temperatures drop in autumn with average daily highs of around 11 degrees Celsius in October. It’s even cooler in November with temps averaging around 6 degrees, and not a lot of sunshine. If you’re visiting Zagreb in September, the weather is still quite pleasant coming out of summer with tops around 22 degrees making it a great month to hit the streets and explore the city with less crowds around too.

Average temperatures: 2 – 22 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Tees and pants for September and warmer clothing for layering in October and November.
Don’t forget: A warm coat for night-time.

Winter: December to February

Brrrring your big coat! From December ‘til early March, it’s chill town in Zagreb with average temps around just 2 degrees Celsius. January is the coldest month, and there’s very little sunshine. However, snowfall can be expected during the ski season, which is great news for snow bunnies to hit the slopes on Sljeme, and those wanting to enjoy a white Christmas. Things start getting a little warmer in March when the sun starts hanging around a bit more.

Average temperatures: -4 – 6 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: A thick coat, scarf, gloves, a beanie, boots and warm layers.
Don’t forget: Thermal underwear.

Spring: March to May

Spring is a lovely time to visit Zagreb when beautiful flowers are blooming in the many gardens, parks and fields. It’s also starting to warm up with average daily temps of around 15 degrees by May. The sun is out more, but it rains a bit too during these months. It’s also not quite high tourist season yet, so you won’t pay inflated hotel rates. Spring is also festival season in town with plenty of outdoor events and festivals that run ‘til early summer.

Average temperatures: 1 – 22 degrees Celsius.
Appropriate clothing: Dresses, t-shirts, shorts, lightweight pants and good walking shoes.
Don’t forget: A waterproof jacket or cardi for night.
