Cheap flights to Munich
'Munich loves you' (or 'Munchen mag dich' in German) is the motto of Germany’s third largest city. And after a few days getting to know this liveable city, you’ll soon be saying it back. Munich is an accessible city with grand palaces, art galleries, great museums and historic sites all surrounded by the awe-inspiring alps. Munich is the home of everything Bavarian - pork knuckles, beer halls and, of course, the annual Oktoberfest. Munich is densely populated and it’s no wonder with the quality of life available here that it ranked first in the world's most liveable cities in 2013. The city also offers some high-class shopping opportunities however, due to Bavarian law, or Ladenschlussgesetz, don’t expect to find many stores open on Sundays. Universal Traveller will be sure to get you there with the cheapest flights available to Munich so you'll have some Euros left to splurge.
Flights from Australia to Munich disembark at Munich Airport (MUC), the second busiest in Germany after Frankfurt. The airport is based 28 kilometres northeast of downtown Munich and has been operating as Munich’s main airport since 1992. Munich Airport Terminal Rail Station connects with the Munich Suburban rail service known as the S-bahn. Different lines stretch to most areas of the city with lines 1 and 8 servicing the airport with a travel time of around 40 minutes into the city centre. Taxis are also available, but, due to the airport's location, it's an expensive option.
Flights to Munich from Australia will require at least one stopover, usually in the Middle East. Departure from Sydney, Adelaide or Melbourne will mean a 14-hour flight to either Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Doha followed by a 6.5-hour connecting flight to Munich. The same flight path can be taken from Perth but total flight time will be 3 hours shorter. An alternative option from Perth is to connect through Johannesburg, South Africa, however this is a longer flight. From other capital cities, Universal Traveller can organise a cheap domestic flight or an alternative flight path, most likely through Singapore. Marienplatz is considered the central hive of activity in Munich. It contains a number of historical buildings, including Neues Rathaus, the Neo-Gothic New Town Hall, and Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall). Neues Rathaus brings Marienplatz to a halt a couple of times each day when its glockenspiel rings out over the square. Not far north of Marienplatz is Germany’s largest palace, Residenz. This complex of buildings includes the Residenzmuseum and the Schatzkammer in which the public can marvel at impressive architecture, room decorations and former royal jewels. Continue north to Hofgarten and Englischer Garden to enjoy the open green spaces and wander along the Isar River, a favourite space for students and also nude sunbakers. Not to be forgotten is Munich’s array of art galleries and various museums including Deutches Museum for science and technology and the BMW Museum for car enthusiasts. The Hofbrauhaus is a grand beer hall and popular with tourists. The city is drowned in beer and cheer for a 15-day stretch every September ending on the first Sunday of October for Oktoberfest. It would be wise to plan your trip around these dates for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
